User Responsibilities

It is important that the responsible person (RP) carries out daily visual checks of the control panel and a weekly test of the alarm system by triggering a different call point each week. These tests are to be recorded in the fire logbook. Any false activations and their cause must also be recorded in the logbook and appropriate action taken where required.

Understanding your Fire Alarm System

What Category is your Fire Alarm System

M-Manual System

Category M Systems are manual only systems and rely only on the occupants of the building discovering a fire and operating a manual Call Point to warn others. Such systems are a Basic Requirement.

Manual Systems do not incorporate Automatic Fire Detectors.

L-Life Safety category 5 (L5)

Category L5 Systems are incorporated with Manual Call Points and the installation of Automatic Fire Detection covering Risk Specific areas. Tailored to Risks identified by your Fire Risk Assessment.

L-Life Safety category 4 (L4)

Category L4 Systems are designed to Protect escape routes rather than individual rooms or areas. Detection is installed in corridor and Stairwells to ensure that the paths leading out of the building remain clear of smoke and fire.

L-Life Safety category 3 (L3)

Category L3 systems focus on protecting escape routes but also aim to detect fires in rooms that open onto escape routes. The primary goal is to evacuate the building before an escape route becomes impassable.

L-Life Safety category 2 (L2)

Category L2 systems include the same level of protection as L3 but with the added detection in areas that are of high risk of fire ignition. This might include kitchens, boiler rooms, storage areas with combustible materials.

L-Life Safety category 1 (L1)

Category L1 systems offers the highest level of protection. With automatic fire detection installed in all areas of the building. Including occupied and unoccupied spaces, such as voids, cupboards and roof spaces.
